Tonique Premier is Sylwia’s debut workout. The workout is broken down into three main sections: Squats (15 minutes), Lunges (19 minutes) and Mat or Floorwork (17 minutes). There is also a Cardio Drills section and Cool Down/Stretch. The workout is filmed in a studio/loft setting; the music is great however the workout is accompanied by a voiceover. The DVD is nicely chaptered so you can quickly skip through from exercise to exercise – if necessary.
Tonique Premier is a challenging workout that will test your cardiovascular and muscular endurance. The workout begins with a drill section that lasts five minutes – Sylwia suggests inserting the drill section in between the squat, lunge and mat sequences – maybe I will give it a try next time. The cardio drills consist of jumping jacks, high knee jogs, and plyometric jumps. After the initial drills, the workout moves into the squat sequence. Sylwia includes every variation of a squat in this section – squats, squats with overhead press, squat with front and side kicks, squat with side extensions and plyo squat jumps – in case your legs weren’t tired enough.
Next are the lunges. Again she uses a variety of lunge exercises to engage all the muscles of the lower body – rear lunges with knee up and front kick, curtsy lunges, forward lunges, diagonal lunges and side lunges. But we’re not done yet.
Now it’s time to drop to the floor. Think it’s going to get easier? Before getting started on the floor work some quick drills – mountain climbers and jumping in place - are added in to get the heart rate up. Once on the mat Sylwia gets deep into the muscles with traditional floor work exercises – donkey kicks, fire hydrants, bridge work and abdominals. This is a high repetition workout that accomplishes its goal of exhausting the muscles yet it left me with an awesome sense of accomplishment. Interestingly, I can’t wait to do it again.
